Unveiling Your Light, Cultivating Courage, and Shining in Service

There are 21 days left in Spring. We find ourselves nearing the end of a season of rebirth and renewal. Spring signifies new beginnings, growth, and the birth of fresh ideas. As the season changes, a surge of energy and vitality fills the air, marking the time for taking action after a restful winter and reaping the rewards of abundance in the forthcoming summer.

During this period of self-expression and transformation, many draw parallels to the caterpillar’s journey to becoming a butterfly. However, what often goes unnoticed is that only a fraction, estimated between 10 to 35 percent, of caterpillars successfully complete this magnificent transformation. Humans share a similar fate. How frequently do we seize the opportunity when struck by a bolt of inspiration?

It requires courage, true courage, to embark on a new path — to acknowledge the areas of our lives where we’ve succumbed to a silent depression, where our true selves remain unexpressed. In dimming our own light, we not only deprive ourselves of the abundance and prosperity that surround us, but we also withhold the unique gifts and talents that time and focus have bestowed upon us. However, when we shift our perspective and view our contributions as acts of service, everything changes.

No longer are we speaking into a microphone merely to showcase our intelligence or attending a yoga class solely to stave off the effects of aging. We plant seeds and nurture trees, not for immediate personal gain, but with the knowledge that future generations will revel in the beauty and bounty of nature. We become vessels of service, resonating with others in our field, inspiring change, and fostering connections.

Yet, why do so many of us hide? Fear of change grips us tightly. Deeply ingrained within our programming is the belief that if we change, we will be judged, and that judgment may lead to the loss of relationships. We often equate the loss of a relationship with the loss of our very existence, for our identity is entwined with others. If we lack a reflection, do we truly exist? It’s a profound question, akin to pondering whether a falling tree in a forest makes a sound if no one is around to hear it.

However, irrespective of external circumstances, once we begin to radiate our inner light, we become beacons attracting that which aligns with our true essence. People, places, and events that resonate with our being gravitate toward us, magnetized by our authenticity.

Those who choose to hide often seek solace in each other’s company. They quietly shame and judge those who dare to express their joy and pursue their desires. They gossip, belittle, and covertly compare themselves to others. Conversely, those who embrace risks, dream big, and embrace mistakes thrive and uplift one another. They offer encouragement, support, and repeatedly challenge their community to manifest their highest potential.

So, who do you want to be? It is your every moment that shapes the person you are becoming. At the end of this life, it will not be solely about what you achieve, but rather about the person you have become along the way. It will be about the impact you have made on your environment, how you have felt within your own body, and how others have felt in your presence.

In a culture fixated on leaving a legacy, we often seek external validation to assure ourselves that we are on the right path. However, the wellspring of deep peace and inner knowing can only arise through radical self-acceptance. Radical self-acceptance isn’t something that can be forced; it emerges through self-discovery, trial, and error. It emerges from facing failure and finding resilience, resolution, and, above all, self-love even in the face of hopelessness, isolation, and impossibility.

Ultimately, self-love and acceptance unlock the doors to daring. If we allow fear of failure to paralyze us, we may never take that first step. Our creative potential, left untapped, will stagnate and decay within us.

Journal Prompts:

  • Where in your life do you feel unexpressed, limited, or “depressed”?
  • What small step can you take today to embody and take grounded action in that area?
  • What deep fear underlies your inaction?
  • How could your action in this area actually counteract that fear and bring about satisfaction and fulfillment in your life as a whole?
